From an ongoing project where I contact incarcerated individuals if they would like to collaborate on a creative project with me. Jesse is an artist, and he has a young son that he is unable to see at the moment. Most of his art is of or for his son, so I had the idea to turn it into a quilt– something his kid can play with and tangibly connect with.
Each fabric was carefully hand picked. Especially the underside fabric, which had to be something comforting you could hide underneath, or something you could fill with imagination– so I picked a world map. I spent around 100+ hours on it over the course of 9 months. Each stitch is deliberate, and some done by hand or done in a unique way, like leaves, or flowers, or waves. I copied Jesse’s drawings and tried to get all of his unique pencil strokes and style correct. I spent hours in the fabric store picking patterns that would be playful and interesting to look at, yet also comforting and familiar.
The crimes convicted individuals are public. Please understand that I do not personally know these individuals, but I am trusting that their stories and experiences they share are true, and I am only aware of what they tell me about. Each incarcerated individual has given consent to participate in this project.
