This explores, the idea of “softness“ in contrast to the military, which is normally associated with hardship and toughness. My job code in the US Army National Guard was 35F, or “fox“ and “foxtrot.” Foxes are my favorite animal, and I always thought that was a unique personal coincidence with my identity, while the military is about conformity and personal sacrifice. Softness doesn’t mean weak necessarily— it can also mean adaptable, flexible, and open minded.
The contrast of my favorite color, dark red, alongside the royal blue and white refers back to what America’s flag colors represent.
Created for a group exhibition exploring the meaning of “soft” through soft sculpture. Fabric, yarn, faux fur, cardboard, thread, and eyes.
