“Brunch” is a collaborative collection of photographs, inspired by co-director RiverPhoenix Scott's essays.
“After the examination of Len Trivenor's "Give Me Five," a set of pictures taken in 1963 focusing on famous boxer and activist Muhammad Ali, and the application of the different societal issues that bell hooks and Claudia Rankine discuss to the set of pictures, one can conclude that Trivenor's "Give Me Five" plays into a hypocritical role of being both an uplifting piece of work for black society by giving much-needed representation, while simultaneously playing into the problematic occurrences of fetishization, dehumanization, and exotic gaze that white colonial and euro-centric societal perception applies when it comes to art depicting minorities and particularly black people.”
We wanted to play with this narrative by taking over all context of Trievnor’s photoshoot (included in the post), therefore counteracting contemporary racial commodification.
Shot on film and digital.
