The intent was to make people think. A plea to think freely. I made propaganda for propaganda, enhanced by the military uniform's enforcing quality, and the striking iconography of an anagram in capitalized white serif on a red little book.
Passerby made a choice: stay within their comfortable assumptions, or interact and take a book. That's where the performance became a means of publication. Books are an intimate experience. Self-reflection became an indulgence of the few.
The interview transcribed in this booklet is from a 42 minute film called “Communist Propaganda” by the USIA (United States Information Agency) filmed at the Pentagon and can be found on the Youtube channel “US National Archives” in their video titled “Communist Propaganda.”
Further publication included a physical audio tape which held dialogue interactions from the performance, alongside redacted transcripts in the form of released FBI documents. The audio tape was burnt and spliced– redacted– and displayed in an exhibit in a tape player, alongside a burnt book, free copies to take, and a video displaying the performance.
This won an award from Massachusetts College of Art and Design Vice President at the 2025 School Show. Over 50 people were involved in the making of this project, culminating in over 100 hours of work.
